In the field of digital technology, we are living what would have looked like a science fiction novel fifty years ago. The rapid advancement of digital technology has not only influenced our lifestyle; it redefined it in a way. Our current reality, with its seamless integration of virtual elements, would have seemed like a fantastic dream to people half a century ago.
The reality of today’s digital influence
Yesterday’s science fiction is today’s reality.” This saying has never been more true. The Internet, smartphones, virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) have transformed our everyday experiences in ways that were once reserved for the pages of speculative fiction. We live in a world where digital support is just a voice command and virtual worlds are just a headset away.
Imagine traveling back 50 years and describing today’s world. One might say, “In the future, we will carry devices in our pockets that are more powerful than the computers that sent man to the moon.” That statement alone would sound like a line from a science fiction novel to audiences of the past . Nowadays, these devices not only exist but have become an integral part of our daily lives.

The Digital Lifestyle: A New Norm
The digital revolution has brought about a lifestyle that revolves around efficiency and connectivity. “We are now hyper-connected, sharing our lives with the world and consuming information at a pace that would have been unimaginable,” says tech analyst Jenna Wortham. Our interactions, our work and even personal health monitoring are digitized.
Today we live in a society in which false realities are manufactured by the media, by governments, by large corporations, by religious groups, political groups, etc. That’s why I ask in my writing: What is real?
Philip K. Dick
Our journey through this digital landscape is similar to navigating a science fiction novel. Isaac Asimov aptly observed: “The saddest aspect of life right now is that science fiction is accumulating knowledge faster than society is accumulating wisdom.”. This observation is particularly true today as we grapple with the rapid advancement of technology and its impact on our society and personal lives.

A future beyond imagination
As we move forward, the possibilities seem limitless. What we consider innovative today could be the starting point for future innovations. “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed,” said the famous writer William Gibson. This unequal distribution suggests even more spectacular progress on the horizon.
The impact of digital technology on our lives is profound and far-reaching. It has turned what was once science fiction into everyday reality and changed our world in ways once only imagined. As we navigate this “virtual dreamtime,” it is exciting to think about what the next fifty years might bring.
